This American Flag 7-Layer Dip is one of everyone’s favorite 4th of July appetizers! It’s a taco dip filled with flavorful layers of beans, guacamole, salsa, and a special sour cream sauce. This easy-to-assemble patriotic chip dip is perfect for any red, white, and blue gathering!

This appetizer isn’t just for Independence Day, it’s perfect for Memorial Day, Veteran’s Day, Flag Day, and all patriotic holidays. Make it in advance and refrigerate it for later!

Patriotic Taco Dip

Ingredients:

Here’s a quick look at what you’ll need to make this dreamy dip. Be sure to scroll to the recipe card below for exact measurements.  

  • Ground beef – Ground turkey would also do the trick. 
  • Taco seasoning
  • Cream cheese – You can leave out the cream cheese and double up on sour cream instead. 
  • Sour cream
  • Refried beans
  • Diced green chilis
  • Guacamole
  • Salsa
  • Shredded pepper jack cheese – Any white shredded cheese will work here. Mozzarella, provolone, white cheddar, etc. 
  • Sliced mozzarella cheese
  • Diced tomato – fresh tomato or drained canned tomato
  • Sliced black olives – The olives are optional but they help keep the corn chips from sinking into the dip and getting soggy.
  • Blue corn chips
Ingredients

Supplies:

Gather your supplies around you before diving headfirst into the recipe. Here’s an inventory list for you.

  • Skillet 
  • Wooden spoon 
  • Bowl
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Whisk or handheld mixer (for the cream cheese mixture)
  • 9X13-inch casserole dish
  • 1-inch star cookie cutter
Seasoned ground beef

Instructions:

Season and brown the beef. Add the beef to a large heavy bottom skillet. Cook the beef until browned and cooked through, crumbling it as you go. Turn off the heat, drain the grease from the beef, and stir in one taco seasoning packet. Set aside.

Cut out stars. Cut stars out of the sliced mozzarella cheese.

Seasoned sour cream

Beat. In a medium bowl, beat together the cream cheese, sour cream, and remaining taco seasoning packet until smooth.

Layer. In a 9X13 casserole dish, layer (in order) the refried beans, cooked ground beef, green chilis, sour cream mixture, guacamole, salsa, and pepper jack.

Make it a flag. Arrange the black olives in the top left corner where the blue of the American flag would be. Make rows of tomatoes (like the stripes on a flag) over the white pepper jack layer.

Layer the chips over the olives to prevent the chips from getting soggy sitting on salsa and cheese. Place stars over the chips.

Recipe Tip

Do I have to use store-bought ingredients or can I make my own?

If you have the time and energy to make this patriotic dip more “from scratch”, go for it! You could make your own refried beans, salsa, taco seasoning, or guacamole. If you’re feeling adventurous, you could even make your own blue corn tortilla chips!

Storage

Once everyone is done munching on this delectable dip, cover the casserole dish with a double layer of plastic wrap or transfer the leftovers to an airtight container. The chips might get a little soggy but you can store the dip in the fridge for up to 4 days.

  • 1 cup blue corn chips (plus more for dipping!)
