Philly Cheesesteak Casserole
The Philly cheese steak casserole is a delicious twist on the traditional Philly cheesesteak sandwich. It’s filled with juicy beef, sautéed onions, and gooey melted cheese and has the best flavors. A simple casserole to make with simple ingredients!

Pin It NowIngredients:
- Steak: This recipe calls for thinly sliced steak but you can also use ground beef or ground turkey.
- Bell peppers: I like using sliced bell peppers but you can also dice them as well. The peppers don’t have to be red and green. Green peppers will work as well.
- Small onion: I used red onions but you can use a sliced or diced yellow onion.
- Mushrooms: Sliced mushrooms are optional.
- Garlic powder and onion powder: These are my go-to spices! You can also use Italian seasoning, paprika, or chili powder as an alternative or in addition to the spices in this recipe.
- Worcestershire sauce: Also known as the world’s hardest sauce to pronounce, this sauce adds a subtle sweetness to the casserole and enhances the flavors of the beef and veggies.
- Olive oil: I used olive oil but you can use your favorite vegetable oil.
- Cream Cheese: this ingredient makes the casserole ultra-creamy
- Provolone cheese: This stretchy cheese is perfect for this casserole because it is less greasy than most melted cheeses, and it adds a creamy and tangy flavor to the casserole.
- Beef broth: Beef broth gives the casserole a rich and meaty flavor
Beef Choices
You can use any type of beef for this casserole. Some examples include shaved steak, lean ground beef, flank steak, ribeye steak, and sirloin steak. I recommend using a lean cut of beef because it is easier to slice it thin.
Instructions:
In a large skillet over medium heat, add oil and sliced steak. Be sure to drain any excess grease. Season the steak with garlic powder, onion powder, and chili powder, and cook it until it browns.
In the same skillet, add oil sliced peppers, mushrooms, and onions. Stir and cook until they have softened.
Add cream cheese, Worcestershire sauce, and beef broth to the skillet. Cook until the cream cheese melts.
Return the beef back into the skillet and stir until the ingredients are well combined.
Transfer the mix to a casserole dish and top the entire dish with Provolone cheese slices. Bake the Philly Cheesesteak Casserole at 350 degrees f for 10-15 minutes or until the cheese melts.
Make-Ahead Recipe
You can totally make this casserole ahead of time! When I do, I usually store it in the refrigerator until it’s ready to be baked. You’ll probably need to add a few more minutes to the baking time if the casserole has been chilled.
Freezer Recipe
You can freeze this casserole for up to 3 months. Before freezing it, let it cool completely and then wrap it tightly with plastic wrap and aluminum foil then place it in the freezer. To reheat, all you need to do is thaw the casserole overnight in the refrigerator before baking according to the instructions in this recipe.
Side Dish Options
This casserole can be served with a side of garlic bread, dinner rolls, a green salad, baked potatoes, sweet potatoes, french fries, tater tots, or a large bowl of rice.
Store leftovers in the fridge for up to 3-4 days. Let the casserole cool and then cover it with plastic wrap or aluminum foil. You can also place the casserole in an airtight container. For some reason, the microwave leftovers always taste better the next day!
“This turned out really good! I doubled the veggies and added some spice and there were no leftovers. It was requested that I make it again!”
