Overnight French Toast Casserole

- ½ cup butter, plus 1 tablespoon for greasing the dish
- 2 sticks of French bread
- 10 eggs
- 1 cup milk
- 2 cups heavy cream
- ½ cup granulated sugar
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- ½ cup light brown sugar
- ½ cup flour
Spray a 9 x 13 x 3 oven-safe baking dish with an oil spray or grease the dish with one tablespoon of butter.
Cut the bread into cubes and set the dish aside.
In a large bowl, beat the eggs, adding the milk, cream, vanilla and granulated sugar.
Pour the mixture over the bread, cover tightly and refrigerate overnight.
Remove the prepared baking dish from the refrigerator and let it stand at room temperature for approx. 45 mins.
Preheat oven to 375°
Stir the brown sugar, flour, and salt in a small bowl.
Grate the butter on top and cut in with a pastry cutter until it looks like large crumbs.
Evenly sprinkle the crumble mixture over the bread.
Bake uncovered for 40-45 minutes until the sides and top of the casserole are golden brown, and the inside is set.
Can I cut the sugar in this recipe?
You can reduce the sugar to ¼ cup for the egg mixture and the crumb topping.
